LevelSet: Early Feedback

How do your new leaders know if they're being effective? Are they interacting successfully with the organization and its people? What is the early "word on the street" about your leaders? Do they "get it"?

Is anyone giving those new leaders feedback - either positive or negative? Do they know what to do with it?

In many companies, most of the answers to the questions above are "No." This gap is a major contributor to leader derailment. Without information to the contrary, most leaders will continue to behave in ways they have throughout their careers.  Previous success can lead to current failure. Without feedback, most leaders remain oblivious to the negative impact of their actions.

With appropriate and timely feedback, derailment can be avoided, and overall effectiveness enhanced. Leaders need to know how well they are navigating, and whether or not they're perceived as "getting it." They need to get, and stay, aligned with their team and the organization. A structured approach to gathering and providing new leader feedback not only closes gaps, but also increases the organization's capability at giving and receiving needed feedback.
